In mid-March, the Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship awarded a total of $124,000 to 42 Oregon High School students. This is the most given in a single year by VOA Oregon to students impacted by the realities of addiction and poverty in their families.
I applied for this scholarship because of my family as well as the financial situation I’m in. I learned the definition of foster care at the age of 5.
10 years after originally attending the Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship Awards Ceremony in 2013, Steve Duin came back as the keynote speaker for this year’s annual ceremony.
On Wednesday, May 3rd, Volunteers of America Oregon Men’s Residential Center had the honor of hosting the annual Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony.

I applied for the Al Forthan Scholarship because volunteer work and speaking out about social justice issues have been an important part of my life.
The Al Forthan Scholarship was a turning point in my story, where possibilities opened up that once seemed out of reach. With the support I received, I felt empowered to break the generational cycle of adversity through education and expanded perspectives.
On May 5th Volunteers of America Oregon hosted its 10th Annual Al Forthan Memorial Scholarship Awards Ceremony. This year the scholarship awarded $60,000 to 29 Oregon students who have come from families impacted by addiction.
