“We are so pleased to honor Richard and Carilyn Alexander with the DePreist Award for Excellence,” said Volunteers of America Oregon President & CEO Kay Toran.  “They truly exemplify all that the word excellence means through their commitment to making our community a better place for all of us.  They have a deep understanding of the issues in our community, particularly of the challenges facing low-income and at-risk children and families.”

Richard and Carilyn are strong advocates for early-intervention programs, such as VOA Oregon’s Family Relief Nursery, that help set children on a healthy path to ensure success in school and in life.

Richard was the architect and leader of the Ready for School campaign, which leveraged the power of business and civic leaders to secure an additional $39 million in state funding for Oregon Head Start Pre-kindergarten.  The founder and former president of Viking Industries, the window and door manufacturing company headquartered in Portland, Richard currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Capital Pacific Bank.  He is Vice Chair of the Marylhurst University Board of Trustees and a board member of the Children’s Institute.

In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the DePreist award, a special Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to honor former Governor Victor G. Atiyeh.  During his three decades in public service, he worked to improve state management, reform workers compensation and promote energy and economic development programs.

Congratulations, Richard and Carilyn Alexander, and former Governor Atiyeh!
